This project delivered the new Melbourne workplace for Akaysha Energy, a company operating at the forefront of the energy transition through the design and deployment of utility-scale battery storage solutions. The brief challenged conventional workplace models, calling for an environment that could reflect the clarity, purpose and momentum of the organisation’s work.
Beyond supporting rapid growth and highly technical operations, the workplace was required to embody key ideas central to Akaysha’s mission — stored energy, flow and connection. The ambition was to create a space that not only functions efficiently, but also communicates a strong and legible identity aligned with the company’s role in shaping a sustainable energy future.
The interior design is underpinned by a clear conceptual framework derived from the logic of the battery. Internal offices are conceived as modular, repeatable elements — discrete in function yet collectively contributing to the performance of the whole. This organising principle informed both spatial planning and construction methodology, establishing a disciplined and highly legible layout.
Delivered in close collaboration with interior design partner Made For, the project prioritised early resolution of technical detail to ensure continuity between concept and built outcome. A central circulation spine anchors the workplace, with office modules arranged rhythmically along its length to create order, clarity and intuitive wayfinding. Translucent wall systems allow light to permeate deep into the floorplate, reinforcing visual connectivity and evoking the movement of energy through space.
Supporting spaces introduce variation in pace and use. A quiet library provides an environment for focused work and reflection, while tiered seating elements accommodate collaboration, presentations and informal exchange. From a delivery perspective, the project required a high degree of precision, particularly in coordinating services within an exposed ceiling and executing bespoke joinery and tiered structures. A structured, safety-led construction process ensured consistency, quality and efficiency from site establishment through to completion.
The completed workplace fitout provides Akaysha Energy with a highly considered environment that extends beyond functionality to express the organisation’s core purpose. The modular planning framework offers flexibility and scalability, supporting ongoing growth while maintaining spatial clarity and coherence.
A balanced mix of collaborative, focused and informal settings enables teams to transition seamlessly between modes of work, while the permeable, light-filled interior fosters transparency and connection. Delivered with durability and adaptability in mind, the fitout is robust and future-ready — a workplace that supports the people and ideas driving Australia’s transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
