Located within one of Belo Horizonte’s most emblematic buildings — the JK Building, designed by Oscar Niemeyer — this interior renovation project reimagines a compact space through custom, multifunctional, and integrated design strategies.

Faced with a limited floor area, the solution divides the apartment into two equal halves: one side functions as the kitchen, while the other combines living, sleeping, and working zones into a seamless configuration. The only physical division is the wooden sink counter with a retractable dining table, while the distinction between uses is reinforced through color: the kitchen is dominated by green tones on walls and ceiling, paired with ceramic tile accents; the opposite side features a custom-built gray wood cabinet.

This cabinet houses the most transformative element of the project: a retractable double bed. When stowed, it reveals a clean living room setup centered around a sofa. On the opposite wall, a second built-in unit serves as the workspace, integrating a desk, shelving, and storage — all designed specifically for the apartment’s dimensions.

The aesthetic is clearly contemporary, featuring sleek, handle-free millwork, exposed electrical conduits highlighted with contrasting paint, a minimalist roller blind, and expressive use of natural wood. The original hardwood flooring, preserved from the building’s mid-century roots, adds warmth and historic continuity, bridging modern intervention with the JK Building’s architectural legacy.
