The apartment is located in the centre of Sofia, on the last floor in an old building built in the 1930-ties. The property was also accompanied with a small attic room above it and one of the tasks of the project was to connect the two levels adequately. Some of the nice original features of the apartment were its high ceilings, (near 3m height), the original terrazzo floor in the entrance area and in the kitchen; fish-bone parquet in the living area and in the bedroom, also the gypsum ceiling elements. These were all preserved or restored.
The disadvantages that had to be addressed or fixed were the segmented layout and the closeness of the neighbor building – only 1.2m away from the façade. So, by demolishing some of the interior walls which are not load bearing, a more open and spacious living area was formed, also a bigger bathroom and entrance space, leading to a centrally situated office zone. Above the office a staircase was executed, which established the interior connection with the attic room.
The volume of the staircase is closed for privacy reasons. With those structural interventions a spacious and functional layout was achieved. Regarding the design, the aim was to have something timeless and modest, and no excessive decoration or furniture. A nice soft green combined with natural oak and warm white create overall calm, fresh atmosphere which corresponds to the client’s warm temper and personality. The design principles are applied coherently in every room corresponding to its function. The use of natural materials like natural oak veneer, marble floor plates, stone countertop, glazed ceramic tiles, brass lighting fixtures, cotton and linen textiles further complete the timeless sensation of the space.
