Rewriting Space, Interpreting Life
In the vibrant heart of Ragusa, DFG Architetti Associati has completed the complete transformation of a stately penthouse, converting it into a contemporary retreat that fully reflects the needs and spirit of the young couple who own it. The project goes beyond a simple renovation, taking the form of a complete overhaul of the interior layout. The primary goal was to overcome obsolete compartmentalization to embrace a fluid, open space deeply connected to natural light and the outdoors.
The result is an interior architecture that celebrates lightness, where every structural and furnishing element contributes to defining a dynamic yet rigorously ordered environment. The stylistic language adopted is fresh and contemporary, with clean, essential lines. The project's distinctive feature is the skillful balance between formal sobriety and emotional warmth.
Light as an Architectural Element
The pursuit of essential spatiality was fundamental, but not at the expense of comfort. The overall atmosphere is designed to be welcoming and relaxing, thanks to a meticulous study of light. Lighting is not simply an accessory, but an architectural element that follows and enhances the shapes, highlighting the furnishings.
Low ceilings house linear light beams and perimeter LED strips that create soft, diffused ambient lighting. In the living room and kitchen, a system of recessed black tracks and spotlights creates a graphic contrast that directs the light beam onto the worktops and relaxation areas, adding depth and character. Grazing lighting on the textured coverings or wallpapers enhances their texture, transforming the walls into dramatic backdrops.
Living Room and Kitchen: Functionality in Continuity
The living area is designed as an open space, yet cleverly divided into distinct functional areas. The spacious and fully equipped kitchen unfolds along two main axes: a wall of all-white columns that integrates appliances and a pantry, and a forest green suspended base unit. The focal point is the large central island, equipped with an induction hob and integrated sink, which serves as a work surface, snack bar, and social hub.
A highly functional detail is the laundry room: a discreet, technical space connected to the kitchen via a modern pocket door. This solution conceals the utility area, maintaining the kitchen's essential aesthetic while also ensuring immediate and practical access.
Solid, Empty, and Surprising Corners
In this project, DFG Architetti demonstrates that minimalism is not an absence of creativity, but rather a search for balance between solids and voids. An example of this is the element separating the sofa and dining areas: a TV cabinet, partially suspended from the ceiling, which acts as a dramatic backdrop. This seemingly "solid" volume is a multifunctional element and divider that maintains the visual connection between the areas.
A bioethanol fireplace is located on the large floor shelf between the base of the TV wall and the suspended volume. This creates a suggestive blade of fire that adds an element of surprise and warmth, defining a focal point that enriches the space without weighing it down. Elegance comes from understatement, and unexpected corners are the key to personalizing the space.
The Expressiveness of Wallpaper
Another distinctive element of the project is the sophisticated and targeted use of wallpaper to lend personality to the most intimate spaces.
In the master bedroom, a large, abstract, nuanced graphic in taupe and gray tones covers the top of the headboard, creating a soft, textile backdrop that enhances and frames the bed.
In the bathrooms, the wallpapers become true artistic backdrops: one bathroom is adorned with a tropical theme in warm tones of dusty pink and sage green, balanced by the anthracite gray suspended vanity; Another, more intimate bathroom features an abstract floral texture in shades of textured gray, which dialogues with the natural stone and suspended wood and Corian elements.
The Open Vision: Visual and Functional Extension
The project maximized the penthouse's views. The living area was completely oriented toward the terrace, eliminating barriers and featuring large sliding windows. This established an uninterrupted dialogue between interior and exterior, transforming the terrace into a true extension of the living area. The visuals were carefully designed to direct the gaze through the interior spaces, from the kitchen to the horizon outside. Ultimately, the project can be considered an example of how contemporary design can combine simplicity and functionality, creating not just a home, but an experience.
