breathe.austria – “the breathing pavilion” (Austrian contribution to EXPO Milano 2015)

Air as food and a catalyst for urban practices

In response to the theme of this year’s Milan EXPO, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, the Austrian contribution breathe.austria draws our attention to an essential nutrient and one of our most precious resources: air. As fundamental components of the biosphere, air, climate and the atmosphere unite all living creatures on our planet. As such, air is both a source of sustenance and a natural asset. At breathe.austria the pavilion itself is the exhibition. It functions as a prototype to address possible future interaction between the natural environment and urban strategies by demonstrating the potential of hybrid systems that integrate nature AND technology. The central element is a dense Austrian forest brought together with technical elements in order to create a breathing microclimate. With this oxygen- and carbon-producing core, the pavilion becomes an “air generating station” – and the only building on the entire EXPO site to withstand the hot Milanese summer without conventional air conditioning. For the project designers, such combinations of natural and technological systems will initiate a paradigm shift in the future. The pavilion was developed by the interdisciplinary project group team.breathe.austria under the direction of architect, landscape architect and university professor Klaus Loenhart.

Natural performance and integral technology The pavilion’s entire floor area is densely planted with 12 Austrian forest ecotypes, ranging from mosses and shrubs to towering, 12-metre trees. In a natural, water-rich forest, cooling occurs through evapotranspiration, meaning the evaporation of water from flora and fauna as well as from the soil and water surface. At breathe.austria, however, the evaporative cooling process is technically augmented. While the pavilion surface area is only 560 m2, thermodynamic highpressure misting nozzles are used to activate the total evaporation surface of the pavilion vegetation, amounting to around 43,000 m2. Despite the spatial constraints, breathe.austria succeeds in creating a unique climate zone within the pavilion: a pleasantly cool, fresh atmosphere that invites guests to linger. The effective interplay between nature and technology cools the interior space by 5 to 7° C and supplants conventional air conditioning. The pavilion produces 62.5 kg/h of oxygen – enough for 1,800 visitors. On its surface area of 560 m2, breathe.austria achieves the equivalent of a much larger, 3-hectare natural forest. The pavilion serves as a breathing “photosynthesis collector” that contributes to global oxygen production.

The contribution breathe.austria is a model for future urban practices. It demonstrates the great potential and importance of communicating the interaction of technology and natural environments, which can inspire countless other projects. The Austrian pavilion is a sensual, experiential site that connects the seemingly irreconcilable – technology and natural diversity – while being climatically active. Austria provides a living example of hybrid systems combining nature and technology can lead to ecological success.

Austria is world-renowned as a country of culture, with a high standard of living. Austria’s key aim at the Expo Milano 2015 is to reinforce its reputation worldwide as an attractive place to live. Inside its 1,910 square meter exposition site, it showcases the naturally high standards and recreational spaces that make it so well-regarded. Its positive image are enriched by new elements, such as the landscape and climate, playing a key role in driving awareness around the use of sustainable resources. A large quantity of food is already produced with sustainable techniques and the range of organic products available to consumers in supermarkets is higher than anywhere else in Europe. Encouraging strong connections between producers, sellers and consumers is central to Austria’s thematic itinerary of food sustainability; its cuisine is the result of its cultural characteristics, being Austria a culturally independent country within the German-speaking world. Another feature of its exposition is the purity of its climate, air and environment.

Brand description
From May 1 to October 31 2015 Milan will host the Universal Exposition, an event that remains an unmissable showcase for Countries of the world, where they can show the best of their technologies and innovations, and thus stimulate human progress. "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" is the theme and the common thread of Expo Milano 2015: it will encourage international discussion through the events organized both inside and outside the exhibition space. The aim is to give a concrete answer to a vital need for mankind: to ensure enough healthy food for all, respecting Nature and its delicate balance, avoiding food excess and injustice. The Participating Countries, to date about 140, will present technical solutions at their Pavilions and share know-how to meet the epochal challenge of a world that is experiencing strong contradictions. While there are still hungry people (about 870 million undernourished people in 2010-2012), on the other hand there are those who die from poor nutrition and disorders associated with excessive food intake (about 2.8 million deaths from diseases related to obesity or weight problems). Expo Milano 2015: a new model The Milan Expo will launch a new model for the Universal Exposition: the aim is not just to demonstrate the most advanced technologies for a sustainable future, but to be a global and interactive event, whose key players are the Participating Countries, International Organizations, Civil Society associations, Partners and the International Scientific and Economic Community. Expo Milano 2015 will be the platform to share ideas and solutions on the topic of nutrition; it will stimulate creativity and promote innovation of companies. Built as a city, with streets, restaurants, places for events and concerts, the exhibition area will be a live stage from morning to night, animated by thousands of performances, concerts, workshops and exhibitions. Expo Milano 2015 extends over an area of about one million square meters located north-west of Milan and is easy to reach because it is linked to two highways, a few kilometres away from the airports of Linate and Malpensa and connected via high-speed rail line and the metro. Six months of events dedicated to international spectators, a challenge to be won on an issue on which the fate of humanity depends.
