Awrawikara House

This CLT and Glulam home combines prefab speed with carbon-sequestering materials

In the city of Bogor in West Java, Andra Matin has designed the Awrawikara House—an architecturally unique holiday home that sits at the edge of the prestigious Rancamaya Golf Estate. Built from CLT and Glulam, the prefabricated residence was erected in just four days—a landmark moment for engineered timber in Indonesia. Designed as an escape, the home is focused inwards rather than outwards; the warmth of its materials and its unique orientation speaking of calm and contemplation.

Dark wood and introspective floorplan create an atmospheric entry
On arrival, the home gives little away. Finished in horizontal spruce cladding, with just one window visible from the road, the inside of this house is a mystery revealed only once the gravel path to the sheltered entrance has been traversed. Inside, a bright interior completed in luxurious dark wood awaits. The kitchen and living area, which is separated from the foyer by custom shelving, features dramatic sliding doors that open the interior onto a verdant garden and lap pool.

Hand-braided privacy screens and contrasting timber define the upper floor
A concrete ramp completed in dark Balau hardwood cladding leads to a brighter second floor that has been finished in exposed spruce wood. This level houses a main bedroom with ensuite, a second bedroom and bathroom, and a spacious home office. Operable hand braided rattan screens enhance the privacy of the bedrooms, which have views across the garden onto other properties, while also acting as sun protection and aiding airflow. The home is completed by a rooftop terrace that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

An intimate escape with embedded carbon storage
The Glulam and CLT composition of the Awrawikara House allows for an atmospheric and tactile interior, while also storing roughly 70 tonnes of CO₂ within the timber itself. This carbon storage is equivalent to offsetting the annual emissions of around 15 cars or the power of 12 households a year, making the building not only an intimate retreat but also a quietly sustainable presence in the landscape. Here, material choice serves structure and environment simultaneously, embedding ecological thought into the very material of the house.
