The beauty of this bamboo forest in which this resort was sited in formed the basis for all of the design, including material specified.
Materials indigenous to the site like bamboo wood and natural stones were culled, and combined with modern steel and glass to create an exclusive sanctuary that is nature bound and yet unabashedly modern.
Lines, forms and texture of bamboos also gave an impetus to the design, explaining for such architectural devices as continuous screens that line the entire length of the hotel facade, recalling the verticality of a bamboo forest.
Also structural columns raising the Lobby above the ground is another example of the form of bamboos stems exaggerated and turned into a huncyjknal element. The main challenge to the design was in how to negotiate with the – at times – very undulating topography of the site, and this we achieved by splitting the resort into a series of independent pavilions that are linked via articulated tracks with water streams running alongside.
We also took advantage of the site undulation by letting a long sinuous three storeys hotel portion blend into the hillside slope, and let the natural grounds flow seamlessly onto the roof top.
The project has many facilities and features not commonly found in most resorts mainly due to its unique siting within a bamboo forest, and some of them are:
