Banca Padre Pio is a 60-square-meter restaurant in downtown Curitiba, conceived around a simple spatial gesture: gathering.

Located in an area of intense pedestrian movement, particularly at lunchtime, the project transforms a former restaurant into a compact dining space organized around a large communal table. The challenge was to accommodate a significant number of people while preserving comfortable circulation and creating a gentle interior in contrast with the pace of the surrounding city.

The restaurant’s concept takes the communal refectories of old monasteries as a spatial reference, where meals were shared around large common tables. Rather than translating this reference literally, the project turns it into an organizing principle. A custom-made table occupies the center of the room, structuring circulation and defining different forms of permanence around it.

Two new openings connect the interior directly to the sidewalk, establishing circulation paths around the central table and extending the restaurant toward the street. Along the perimeter, built-in benches and small round tables accommodate quicker meals and smaller groups.

Materiality reinforces the tactile and handcrafted character of the project. Small-format ceramic tiles extend continuously from the floor onto the service counter and built-in seating. Light-toned textured walls contrast with reclaimed timber used in the custom-designed central table and benches. Handmade plaster wall lights merge with the textured surfaces, almost disappearing into the walls, while providing soft, indirect illumination.

Architecture, furniture and lighting were conceived as parts of the same spatial system. Between the movement of the street and the intimacy of the interior, Banca Padre Pio creates a brief interval within the everyday rhythm of downtown Curitiba.
