The Bend Pavilion is an all season open-air covered ice rink andsports facility located on an 11-acre urban site in the high desertenvironment of Central Oregon. Defined by an iconic visuallyfloating canopy, the 30,000 sf Pavilion contains an NHL regulationice rinkduring the winter months and sports court surface servinga variety of recreational activities throughout the remaining year.The 10,000 sf Support Building contains reception, meeting space,concessions, skate rental, offices, lockers and storage.
The Pavilion massing features the prominent ice rink roof with asouth orientation and streetfrontage. Nestled into the slopingtopography of the parklike setting, the ice rink is visuallyscreenedfrom the traffic and integrates an event shelter with outdoorseating and fire pits overlooking the rink. The lower north facingSupport Building integrates an inviting mainentrance and offersan acoustical buffer and night lighting filter to the adjoiningneighborhood.
The Pavilion’s levitating roof, 120-feet wide by 240-feet long, isa landmark in the Bend community. Constructed economically withsteel girders and trusses, it utilizes cost-effective materials suchas plywood sheathed soffit and fascia of dark painted cementboard panels. The perimeter ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene)fabric screen with printed frit pattern, installed on the south andwest edges, mitigates the prevailing winds, solar heat gain, anddriven rain and snow while optimizing defused daylighting andtransparency. The canopy’s underside comprised of 5,000 milledplywood slats provides acoustical absorption and offers visualwarmth that references Bend’s natural environment and historyas a mill town. The support building’s exterior is enclosed in apainted cement board rainscreen with a durable steel plate finishand ground faced concrete block at the vulnerable lower surfaces.
The facility is organized with one public entry and control point tothe ice skate rental center, concessions, and divisible multipurposeroom overlookingthe ice rink. A covered exterior walkwayconnects the team locker rooms, exteriorconcessions, ice rink, andoutdoor amenities contained within the fenced compound. The
interior is conceived as an extension of the exterior with exposedwood structure, painted cement board feature walls, rubber floor,and steel plate at the low wall and casework surfaces. Vibrantaccent color creates visual focus and a wayfinding hierarchy thatis integrated into the signage.
