Modular Volumes and Biophilic Design Shape Benoit Batel in Curitiba

Designed by M4Mais Arquitetura e Urbanismo and Julia Sabbag Arquitetura, Benoit Batel is a residential building with 3,740 sqm of built area, located on a 448 sqm plot in the Batel neighborhood of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Developed between 2022 and 2025 and completed in 2026, the project responds to urban constraints, planning regulations, and a program focused on compact residential units to create a high-density tower.

The architecture emerges from the characteristics of the narrow site and the high-density urban context in which the building is located. Rising vertically from the compact plot, the building adopts a modular composition defined by alternating volumes that resemble a set of building blocks. The boxes are sometimes aligned and sometimes offset, creating rhythm and variation across the façade while reinforcing a sense of movement as the tower rises.

This composition is complemented by a deliberate interplay between transparency and opacity. Along the main façade planes, floor-to-ceiling glazing strengthens the connection between the interiors and the surrounding environment. At the balconies, opaque parapets with a white veined texture define the volumes and accentuate the building's modular geometry.

Generous black planters are integrated into the building's volume and sized to accommodate small trees. In addition to introducing vegetation into the architecture, they contribute to the rhythm of the façade and reinforce the project's biophilic strategy.

The connection between the building's base and tower was also conceived as a gradual transition, allowing one volume to progressively transform into the other. At the top, opaque planes clad with metal elements designed to support vegetation contrast with translucent surfaces that frame views toward Curitiba's city center.

The tower's position in relation to the city's topography also informed the design decisions. Its placement and volumetric configuration were developed to provide favorable views from all units. The shifting modules create different perspectives along the building's height, while the composition integrates form, vegetation, and transparency into the urban landscape of a high-density area.
