Sheepfold, Vieux

The project involves the full refurbishment and extension of an agricultural building – a former sheepfold that has already been converted into a dwelling. The programme also includes a sheep shelter and a garden shed.

The aim is to turn the existing building into a comfortable family home with five bedrooms. The main living areas are located on the ground floor, while all but one of the bedrooms are arranged on the upper level. The entire roof structure – including the timber frame and covering – is rebuilt to make the first floor habitable, as it is currently obstructed by existing roof trusses.

The roof of the outbuilding adjoining the dovecote is renovated to create covered parking for two cars. To the east, a new shed is constructed to house an agricultural tractor and a ride-on mower, both dedicated to the upkeep of the outdoor spaces, including the sheep pasture and the walled garden. A contemporary timber-frame extension is added to the south-east corner of the house to open the living spaces onto the surrounding landscape, offering views over the grazing fields and the village houses in the background.

A bike shelter and boiler room are attached to the north gable of the former sheepfold, along the property boundary. The walled garden, which is currently largely paved in concrete, is re-naturalised to improve soil quality and the health of the planting. A courtyard is created between the walled garden and the main building to facilitate maintenance and vehicle manoeuvres.

A covered carport with two spaces is provided near the entrance gate, while visitors can park in a gravelled courtyard sized specifically for this purpose. The sheep pasture is preserved as grazing land, helping to maintain the rural character of the site. Overall, the project seeks to modernise the property’s infrastructure while respecting and enhancing its agricultural and landscape identity.
