The redevelopment of the former C&A properties on the Damrak and Nieuwendijk was one of the key projects of Amsterdam; 'Project 1012' . The project aimed to improve the entrance area to the Amsterdam city center both programmatically and in terms of appearance. An important step was taken with the Beurspassage.

The building on the Damrak was redeveloped into a contemporary retail building with space for Primark and C&A. On the Nieuwendijk, new stores arose, including the Dutch flagship store of ZARA. The spectacular passage serves as a new high-quality urban connection. Artists Arno Coenen, Iris Roskam and Hans van Bentem turned it into a high-profile gesamtkunstwerk.
