The primary design objective for this large educational facility, located in Vienna-Favoriten’s new Neues Landgut urban development zone, was to maximize outdoor open space within a highly compact building footprint. To compensate for the site's limited ground-level footprint, the design incorporates two expansive roof gardens on the first and fifth floors. Open staircases provide direct vertical circulation, establishing vital functional connections between the various outdoor spaces across different levels. Horizontal rhythm is introduced by wraparound balconies, which also serve an essential role in the building's sustainable energy strategy.
This structural configuration enables a "vertical green" building envelope. Utilizing a mix of ground-based planting and elevated planters on the upper levels, climbing plants ascend along dedicated support structures. Along the protruding terraces—particularly on the south façade—this vertical greenery provides crucial summer shading, protecting the interior from overheating. Furthermore, the living façade acts as a natural dust and noise filter, improves the local microclimate, and defines the architectural space. Ultimately, it gives the Education Campus a distinct identity within the "Green Quarter," directly aligning with the area's urban development guidelines.
The spatial layout of the individual educational zones, combined with flexible circulation areas, creates synergies that encourage cross-year and cross-class interaction, fostering collaboration and peer-to-peer learning. The rooms and furnishings are designed to inspire children to engage actively with their surroundings. By allowing for diverse configurations and usage scenarios, the architecture empowers students to dynamically reshape their environment for all-day living, learning, and play.
