Black Barns is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional rural farmstead, set within the wetland landscape of Paterswolde in the Netherlands. The project originates from a vision to create a living environment where architecture and landscape are conceived as one integrated system. Drawing from local agricultural typologies, the design translates the familiar language of barns into a refined, modern composition. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the ensemble is carefully embedded within its surroundings, allowing nature, light and seasonal change to shape the character of the architecture.

The project consists of a main residence and two complementary volumes, arranged as a contemporary farmstead. Constructed using timber-frame systems, the buildings are clad in dark-stained wood and finished with thatched roofs, referencing regional building traditions while ensuring durability and low maintenance. The architectural language is defined by a balance between openness and enclosure: large openings frame views of the landscape, while more closed façades provide privacy and thermal stability. Deep roof overhangs and precise detailing contribute to a coherent and calm architectural expression.

Black Barns approaches sustainability as a fundamental design principle, integrating biobased construction, energy-neutral performance and landscape-driven design into one cohesive concept. The use of timber structures and natural materials reduces embodied carbon, while prefabrication and a restrained palette minimise waste. The buildings are designed to work with natural conditions, including sun orientation, wind patterns and existing vegetation. Passive strategies such as compact volumes, high-performance insulation and shading reduce energy demand, supported by a ground-source heat pump and triple glazing. In addition, the project enhances biodiversity by allowing the landscape to develop naturally around the buildings.

Black Barns offers a living environment where the relationship between inside and outside is central. Carefully positioned openings frame the surrounding landscape as a sequence of changing scenes, bringing daylight and seasonal rhythms into everyday life. The spatial layout supports both living and working functions, providing flexibility and clarity. By dissolving the boundary between architecture and nature, the project creates a calm, immersive atmosphere that supports well-being and fosters a deeper connection to its rural context.
