The existing building had a tertiary occupation - offices and commerce. With 11 floors, it has a reinforced concrete structure with a design that resulted in very low ceiling heights. The use was changed to residential use, keeping the trade on the ground floor and over the store. In this building, which holds an exceptional position in the context of Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Lisbon - taking into account its privileged visual relationship over Parque Eduardo VII - an attempt was made to continue a principle of harmonious integration in the layout of the city.
The proposal had as its premise the redesign of the existing facade, through the wide opening of openings and balconies taking advantage of its system of views, as well as the affirmation of the constructive quality, through the materials used. A new "skin" is added, which is coupled, through the assembly of various elements to the old facade and using new materials and systems, with different visual possibilities such as the treatment of shapes, colors and textures of materials. A new series of metal elements such as railings and window frames are also introduced, also worked as finishing elements that complete this desire to recover the unique scale of detail that this building in this context allows.
It was decided to redefine the roof floor by removing the inclined roof structure to build a new finish in the image of the new facade proposal, contributing to an overall reading. The openings, which were initially small, in the chest and on the outer face of the facade, are now more open and set back, allowing access to outside balconies, establishing a more frank relationship between the apartments and the outside.
