The breakfast lounge of the hotel complex "Le Dimore dell’Idris" overlooks the ancient city of Matera, nestled in the imposing rocky outcrop overlooking the Caveoso Sasso, at the foot of the rock church "Madonna dell’Idris". The outdoor space, a small terrace, offers a striking view of the Sassi. Inside, an open space that preserves the warmth of an ancient dwelling, has been used as a reception and cafè welcoming the visitor in room with simple lines and soft colors. The interior room has been enhanced, but without altering its original material shape, leaving in sight all the architectural elements made of blocks of tuff and flaps of carved rock.
The typical shades of light limestone, which colors the face of the city of Matera, dictate the meticulous and careful chromatic choice of simple and traditional materials such as wood, stone, ferro corten, fabrics. The flooring was made entirely of recovery tiles. The result is an interesting puzzle studied in its irregularity of shapes and colors on the model of the poor tradition, which rediscovers its charm precisely in randomness.
The design intent was to create a place that, thanks to a perfect combination of modern and tradition, creates amazement in the visitor. It was therefore chosen to evoke ancient uses and "furnishings" that characterized the dwellings of the Sassi in which the interiors, instead of doors, were separated by fabrics hanging from ropes or wooden or metal rods.The materials – wood, stone and metal – are the protagonists of the design of the fireplace that, with its volumes, with pure and simple geometries, imposes itself showing itself in all its majesty inside the room.
The illuminating elements, simple wooden cylinders, as simple are the traditions of these places, envelop the place and articulate themselves on structures ofcorten and outlining the room.
