Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital’s ambulatory care centre and outpatient clinics stand as critical elements within the institution’s recently completed emergency department. The three storey addition is thoughtfully integrated with the existing volumes and confers to the entire composition an harmonious and balanced result.
A key aspect of the architectural concept consisted in lowering the ground level at the building’s facade. This permitted the creation of a green space onto which opens the lower level. By providing abundant fenestration and natural light, this strategy greatly increased the quality of spaces provided to the users.
In addition, an imposing concrete staircase located on a pivotal corner of the new construction provides a sculptural anchor point. Glazing spanning the entire height of the staircase enhances the element by bringing in natural light. This dynamic gesture contributes to the rhythm created by the volumes where varying degrees of light intensities play off the transparency and opacity of the chosen materials. While respecting the building’s original composition, the new extension is resolutely modern and contemporary. The architecture supports the renewal of services offered to the population and the actualization of technologies available to health-care personnel.
