This project is part of the urban development plan for the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront, under the Polis Program. It focuses on the Via Marítima do Cabedelo, a dedicated route for cyclists and pedestrians running roughly 1,130 meters from Lavadores Beach to São Paio Park. Our goal was to improve the river and seafront areas, creating a welcoming route that emphasizes the natural beauty of the coast.
The path follows the cliff edge. Between Lavadores Beach and the park, we carefully integrated the cycle route with existing car traffic, maintaining one or two-way vehicle access where necessary. The track itself is paved with red bituminous asphalt, bordered by pre-cast concrete curbs that clearly separate it from the road. To keep the intervention subtle, the alignment follows the existing terrain, avoiding major changes to the landscape.
Along the seafront, we installed a continuous pre-cast concrete bench mounted on a reinforced concrete frame, sitting 40 cm above the pavement. In certain spots, the bench levels out with the ground, creating flexible seating areas. We completed the space with essential urban furniture, including waste bins, drinking fountains, and bike racks.
Near the "GNR-GF" building, we designed a small plaza to serve as a resting point and a connection to nearby pedestrian paths. This area is paved with traditional granite cubes and sits 30 cm higher than the cycle path, creating a clear visual and physical distinction.
Finally, the lighting system was a key priority. Rather than just placing isolated lamp posts, we designed the lighting as an integrated solution that covers both the urban path and the natural surroundings, ensuring the space remains safe and enjoyable to use after dark.
