Designed for a young family of four, the 5,000 square-foot home features the best of both worlds—quite literally. Its unique assemblage of antique and reclaimed materials conveys the classic, provincial French feel sought by the wife while its streamlined programming and detailing satisfies the husband’s penchant for Contemporary American style.

Hand-selecting materials and employing centuries-old building techniques was crucial to create unparalleled authenticity.
The contrast of the gently sloped arches and the straight, rugged beams; the matte white plaster and polished black steel; and the wispy, flowery vines against hardy limestone are what give this country French house its fresh California vibe.

French doors drench the master bathroom in sunshine and offer access to a private patio for a spa-inspired atmosphere.

The doors and window trim are in finished in a steel-blue hue concocted onsite from eight coats of translucent paint that resulted in a unique patina when layered. On the custom vanity, a honed Carrara marble vessel-style sink is reminiscent of an ancient water basin. A mosaic of hand-painted terracotta tiles adds depth and decoration to a niche above the tub.   

Old world elements are balanced by poignantly placed contemporary features.

In the kitchen, modern pendant lights and counter stools lighten the load of the substantial oak island and its 5-inch-thick Carrera marble countertop. Exposed stainless steel appliances juxtapose the rugged stone and weathered wood. Adjacent to the kitchen, a Cote d’Azur limestone mantel grounds the light-filled living room. The oak etagere beside it is custom designed for the space and features a whitewashed finished to balance the room’s richly stained wood beams and headers. Down the hallway, in the master suite, a grand arched window frames garden vistas. A four-poster canopy bed calls the eye up and highlights the vaulted cathedral ceiling.

Sweeping views of the pool lawn, gardens, redwoods, and ridges can be enjoyed from the rear terrace.

Limestone steps connect the main house to the pool lawn below. A lush flower and herb garden nestles between them and infuses the property with fresh fragrance year-round. As evening falls, French doors lead to the main courtyard designed for al fresco entertaining. Instead of traditional wood, the pergola is made of steel for a sleeker, more modern aesthetic. A grapevine canopy provides shelter.
