Designing clarity and connection within a complex program

Canaccord Genuity's New York headquarters required a workplace that could support a large trading group, multiple business units, a client-facing conference center, and a distinct workplace identity, all within a long, narrow floorplate with a central core and limited perimeter. The design transforms these constraints into opportunities by maximizing daylight, strengthening connectivity, and creating a hospitality-driven experience for both employees and clients.

At the heart of the program was the trading floor, which required perimeter access to natural light and close adjacency to operational support teams. The design organizes the full trading team on a single level while relocating other business units to the second floor. This approach preserves key adjacencies, maximizes daylight for the most staff-intensive spaces, and dedicates the primary level to reception and client-facing conference facilities.

The defining architectural intervention removes a portion of the slab at reception to create a double-height arrival space. The intervention draws natural light deep into the interior, establishes clear visual connections between both levels, and creates a dramatic sense of arrival. From the upper balcony, employees and visitors overlook the reception, reinforcing visual connectivity and openness throughout the workplace.

Transparency and access to daylight guided the planning throughout the workplace. Glass-fronted private offices line the perimeter, while interior conference rooms are designed with transparent walls that allow daylight to extend from the window wall to the building core. The result is an open, light-filled environment that maintains privacy and acoustic separation where required.

Recognizing the independence of the firm's major business groups, the design includes two cafés, one on each floor. Each serves as a hub for its respective team, supporting informal collaboration and day-to-day convenience without requiring cross-floor movement. On the client-facing level, large conference rooms are paired with private receiving lounges that offer guests a comfortable arrival experience while providing flexible breakout space during larger meetings.
