This project was born from the will of the Cabildo, in collaboration with the Vilaflor de Chasna City Council, to improve a local infrastructure whose function is conditioned by the weather of the environment.
The general intervention is configured by adapting the needs program to the particularities of the plot on which it sits. The ground laid has an orientation in a practically southeast-northwest longitudinal direction, open on all sides and with access from the southeast corner.
The services access to the field is through the southeast corner, through a locksmith gate that is accessed from a transversal to the main road and that separates it from the School and the Church. The rest of the field is free, with a small changing room module in the middle part of its long side, to the north.
The plot has a certain slope towards the southwest, with the long side on the line of minimum slope and the transversal on the line of maximum slope. In this way, the southwest part is the most exposed downhill towards the views but also towards the weather, while the northeast side that houses the changing rooms is slightly buried in the ground, more sheltered.
The local climate, being located in the middle of the southern slopes, makes the temperature fluctuations important as well as the hours of insolation, being downwind of the face dominated by the trade winds and the sea of clouds. In addition, the specific winds in southern storms that go up the slope are notable, precisely because of the steepness of the slopes and because they are the storms that carry the greatest winds. As a significant factor is also that when exceeding 1,000 meters of altitude, in the upper fringe of the midlands, freezing temperatures can already be reached outdoors.
The climatology, the orography and the situation of the plot are the elements
fundamental for the design and dimensioning of this roof, since it will be open and without enclosures.
Made with a corrugated sheet roof, on metal profile frames in the short direction of the court. On the north side the pillars are straight, while on the short sides and the southwest side they are distributed in a Y shape, minimizing the support points and moving the footings away from the perimeter points, which are the most conflictive for the foundations. The ridge is on the north side since this built side is higher and adjusts to the topography as well as improving the luminosity of the space under the roof.
The orientation of the same allows the existence of two of the four closed skirts at half height, with translucent sheet. In this way, ventilation and natural lighting are maintained but crosswinds are reduced and a little more protected from inclement weather.
From the point of view of infrastructures, it is also easier to collect water on the south side, where there is a non-orthogonal boundary that will house a landscaped space. The inclined arrangement in plan and elevation of the porticoes is made trying to respect the current state as much as possible so that the intervention is minimized and the unique spaces that are generated in all the encounters with the existing walls are taken advantage of.
