The design brief was to design and execute the interiors and façade of the villa in a modernized way, whilst keeping in line with the villa’s Mediterranean architecture and maintaining classic architectural elements but incorporating and creating opportunities for contemporary elements and furnishings. Core requirements were to extend the villa and change all windows, doors, floor and wall finishes, and to furnish with custom joinery, furnishing, and art specification.

To achieve this, we opted to lean into the Mediterranean architecture and incorporate additional arches where the spaces allowed. We took a modern approach to classic inlay borders by making them high contrast and adding geometric designs to create visual interest. We designed wall moldings to add classic flare to the walls but kept the furnishings and decorative lighting quite contemporary. Throughout the entire house there are classic elements that feel contemporary because of the way we have designed them, playing with color, material, and proportion; and elevating these elements with contemporary furnishings.

To achieve the “Modern Mediterranean” look, we started by designing the arched façade doors and windows with ultra - slim black steel profiles. These doors and windows are one of the largest design elements of the villa. Arched doors with profiles this slim are not readily available in this market, even though they are quite common throughout Europe. We worked with a local steel manufacturer to manufacture several prototypes before settling on the final version. They are complete with concealed hinges, double glazed performance glass, and are thermally broken for insulation and energy efficiency. These doors & windows have been such a huge success we have used them in several more projects with an even wider range of features and functionality.

The original villa size was not sufficient for the requirements of the family, so we added an additional 1,500 square feet in extensions to the villa in order to create a grand living room on the ground floor.  Over the Ground floor extension made significant modifications to the first floor to enlarge on the bedroom bathrooms and add an informal family tv lounge. Furthermore, the new master bathroom complete with dual sinks and a dual shower, was another extension over the garage.

The joinery, kitchen, shelving units, and office were all customized and manufactured by Creating Homes. The predominant materials used follow a monochromatic palette of black and white porcelain and marble finishes, touches of gray carried out in fabrics and floor covering; and stained veneer, and bronze accents for warmth.

The main flooring is 6mm large format porcelain tiles in Unique Onyx paired with the inlay border in Pietra Gray. These materials were chosen because of their size, realistic mimicking of marble, and the border inlay allowed for us to add visual interest in dead spaces, in addition to meeting the design brief of incorporating classic yet modernized elements.

The biggest challenge we faced was the timeline, as the client wanted to add approximately 2,000ft2 of extensions, and to incorporate innovation into this timeframe. The project took six months, from demolition to delivery, including all of the furniture and decorations.
