Casa K

DAAA Haus as Architects

What was the brief?
The house is a 280sqm apartment in the old part of the urban seaside city of St. Julian’s, Malta. It consists of 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms a large open plan kitchen, living and dining, a central yard with a bamboo tree brightening up the hallway and a good-sized back garden with a small pool.

The overall design is minimal with a lot of Japanese influences mixed with some of the best Italian artisan craftsmanship as well as carefully selected iconic designers’ pieces.

An elegantly streamlined and tranquil space, the colour palette is predominantly neutral with flashes of rich colour which reflect the current design trend for Japanese minimalism which is all about a decluttered space in which the pieces within it are functional but also beautiful.

What were the key challenges?
The aim with Casa K was to convey feelings of calm and serenity and to utilise every inch available. The family moved from a semi-detached villa in Naxxar to this apartment in St. Julian’s for a more comfortable and convenient lifestyle with their teenage sons. Maximising all space was crucial and seamlessly done by means of a well thought out design which not only ensured that it was all carefully planned to serve a purpose but also aesthetically beautiful.

The methodical storage units throughout the apartment, feature wall created from the bespoke wardrobe which includes a hidden door leading to the ensuite bathroom, storage blended into the wall, hidden doors for an uncluttered look, with no cornicing and no skirting are a few examples of this which create balance and harmony. For the sake of maximizing natural light throughout the apartment, the shaft opening was decorated in a glass feature using crittall style and ribbed glass to hide the services therein without cutting out the light. Behind the glass is a semi-artificial bamboo tree which was placed there to create drama and complement the Asian influenced interiors.
