Casa RZZ

STUDIOCARTA (Mauro Carta) as Architects

Casa RZZ is located in Mac Mahon district, an historical and low-income neighbourhood of Milan, which have recently been subject of an urban and social renewal.

Being at the fourth floor of a multi-storey building, the apartment provides a privileged view over the green courtyard. The previous condition of the apartment was constrained by a few spatial limitations due to the location of the technical shaft that did not allow the relocation of the bathroom and the kitchen. This challenging situation was solved by the strong presence of the new yellow entrance, which organises the arrangement of the services space in a compact core. This deep and warm yellow echoes the colour of existing tiles in the common staircase: the entrance corridor as a transition between outdoor and indoor of the house.

Moreover, the scenic entrance is a clear statement to divide the service spaces from the living area. From this yellow space, through a sliding door, you can reach the laundry and the bathroom. These two private spaces are characterized by a grid, which is the result of the combination of white ice tiles with black joints. The regular grid also acts as a perfect background for the industrial furniture of the bathroom.

The orientation of the yellow entrance suggests a straight route experience through the open space, the main area of house. Along a straight line, the kitchenette, the dining area and the living room are arranged one after the other. It is a single and large open space brightened by the natural light coming from the windows.

The shapes and colours of this area are intentionally neutral, to highlight even more the warm yellow entrance and its straight cut, which becomes the protagonist of the space. The sleeping area is separated by the rest of the house thanks to an equipped corridor with dark grey wardrobes, with the same style of the kitchenette. This choice shows the will to treat the service spaces in the same way, creating a distinction from the main spaces.

This project with the strong and simple sign of the yellow space gives continuity and fluidity to the house, bounding all the access to the different rooms together.
