A true showcase for science and innovation, this project embodies a commitment to knowledge and the sustainable valorisation of forest resources. The new Boreal Forest Research and Innovation Pavilion at CEDFOB stands as a landmark for both the Baie-Comeau community and the CEGEP. Designed to meet the needs of research teams and students, it unfolds over three levels within a simple, efficient volume.

A design inspired by the forest
The architectural concept draws its inspiration from the sensory richness and formal qualities of the boreal forest. Verticality, rhythm, and the interplay of shadow and light guided the modulation of the façades and the selection of materials. The metallic aluminum cladding reflects the surrounding landscape, while Eastern white cedar slats, arranged in varying densities, evoke the morphology of the trees. This treatment gives the building a strong identity—both contemporary and deeply rooted in its environment. The main entrance, marked by a welcoming cantilever, extends the experience by inviting visitors into an architectural promenade reminiscent of forest pathways.

Wood at the heart of the structure
A noble and renewable material, wood plays a central role in the design. The structural system combines two approaches tailored to the building’s functions: a mass timber glulam frame for the hall and interpretation space—creating generous, light-filled areas—and a light wood-frame structure for the office and classroom zones. This strategy highlights both the aesthetic and technical qualities of wood while underscoring a strong commitment to sustainable construction.
