The design concerns an area of about 4,500 square metres, which is placed next to the already existing cemetery in order to complete the area allocated for this purpose. This plan, which also involves the south side, where we can find the current side entrance, it const the building of about 1,230 loculi, 720 ossuaries/cinerary urns and 12 private chapels, thus the complex will cover the citizen’s needs for the next 15 years. From the urbanistic point of view, the cemetery is divided into 2 parts. The first-one bears a clear 19th century influence and defines it as a worship place, it’s similar to other places of the surroundings and of Tuscany. The second part, dates from the 60s/80s, therefore the different languages of two different planners create a typological confusion and we notice a loss of identity. This ensemble is crossed by a longitudinal axis which connects the main entrance to the church and a perpendicular axis starting from the side entrance. This new plan is trying to give back to the cemetery its own identity both of worship and respect, and it is developed on the continuation of the longitudinal axis. The old church has been demolished to free the only access to the expansion area; a new church was built as to complete the long perspective axis. The new church is characterized by large crosses which are built on each sides of the building, they solve both structural and an iconographic function. The rest of the church is made of glass and it comes out as if compressed and set into the stones coating the private chapels. On both sides of the church there are going to be two buildings in white reinforced concrete, characterized by a huge grid which goes to outline an area of semishade. The buildings are going to be on two floors: downstairs there are some containers of various dimensions in order to host the loculi, the cinerary urns, the ossuaries. Besides, there are going to be benches to rest and pray, some small fountains, toilet facilities and stairs. On the upper floor , the loculi will be placed in an orderly manner and there will be a balcony which runs along the loculi and gives out onto the ground floor. The buildings which give shape to this space are set along the perimeter of the site in order to make up a yard. They are detached from the walls by 3 metres because this space is going to be lined with some rows of cypress trees, which give this area an immediate sense of identity; by this way this empty stripes become “gardens of prayer”. The inner yard includes a lawn for the land graves, on the south side, near the side entrance, we envisage the building of a functional arch which will host a flower shop. Besides, on the south side, in order to join the new and the old area of the cemetery, there is going to be the coating of the existing side with a metallic net for creepers. Finally the parking area is going to double up in size.
