There is, in the context where the project is inserted, a multiplicity of concomitant times, guided in the last 160 years by the great circulation of users and the appreciation of the community for this historic building. The Florianópolis Public Market, whose history includes demolitions, changes of location, various renovations, and the active participation of generations of consumers, sellers and administrators, receives a new temporal addition resulting from a public will, which aimed to expand the usability of the market.
The new coverage for the central span of the market is configured, then, as another element in this narrative, and as such it must respect and add to the existing without becoming irrelevant or being characterized as mere closure.
A new, protected and freely accessible scale is therefore created, in order to adequately support new stories that are complementary to those already experienced in the market: temporary fairs, cultural presentations, festivities, projections, parades, etc. A new spatial typology is possible in the city of Florianópolis, a covered, public space with free and unrestricted access.
“You have to be light like a bird and not like a feather.”
VALÉRY,Paul (1930) apud CALVINO, Ítalo (1990) p. 28
As it is essentially an architectural project composed of a double surface that rests on the existing context almost without touching it, the premise of lightness, understood as precision and determination (CALVINO, I.), is a fundamental condition in this temporal dialogue. The lightness, perceived in this way, is not linked merely to the weightlessness of the construction system, but to a certain tension between the force of gravity and the “V”-shaped steel pieces, which are suspended, hovering fixedly a little above the level of the existing roofs in order to create a void through which the air circulates freely.
To carry out such a composition, a system was sought that would allow the execution of large spans with a minimum of components and whose arrangement is the result of a simple thought: the location of the two support points 36m apart from each other should take place along the central axis aligned to the existing pillars, in order to maintain the configuration of the existing space, and to avoid that the new foundations generate dangerous interferences to the basement of the historic building. A main beam in rectangular profile is supported on the aforementioned pillars, where intermediate beams are connected, inclined towards the central channel and spaced from each other in spans of 11.4 m.
The last layer of the roof consists of a lightweight, high-strength membrane, which can be retracted through an automated system in which beams slide along rails according to the traction of motor-driven transmission chains, folding the fabric at the ends of the roof. Such a system allows the retraction of the upper protection layer allowing an unobstructed view of the sky and the existing building.
Thus, a proposal that seeks to deal respectfully with the multiplicity of the history of the Public Market of Florianópolis, taking care, however, so that such an intervention, carried out in a precise way, can enhance the space as a democratic place of meeting and coexistence.
