Church

The parish of St. Andrew the Apostle is located in the hamlet of the municipality of Veleso. The town stands in a dominant position on the slope of Mount S. Primo, occupying an open plateau in the valley of Nesso.

The church, with a single nave, has got ancient foundations, date back to 1500 and there was a hospital attached which served the town (from "Node Books").

Thanks by consulting the parish historical archives it is clear that the Parish became independent from Veleso the 28th April, 1749 and underwent an enlargement intervention in 1851, it is reported that in 1850 the first stone was laid and that the 12th October 1851 the works were terminated, the official consecration was made by Monsignor Carsana the 8th September 1874.

It has mentioned the frescoes that adorn the vaults of the nave, starting from the first span with the allegorical representations of the three theological virtues and the Papacy,to the Triumph of St. Andrew (arch), King David, Elias, Isaiah, and Jeremiah (the second span).

In the same period the entrance arch of the left chapel was frescoed and the chapel was decorated.

Shortly before the consecration it was placed the high altar in polychrome marble with an engraved white marble frontal and niello depicting the Martyrdom of St. Andrew, on the invention of Giovanni Maria Tagliaferri of Pognona.

In the mid-twentieth century, the whole presbyterial section was therefore affected by a large decorative campaign conducted by C.M. Mauri, who frescoed the side walls in 1954 with the Call of St. Andrew where St. Andrea extols his faith before a representative of Roman power, and Gaetano Giudici of Milan, author in 1953 of the two windows with the Eucharistic Christ, Elijah and the angel.

Other interventions have been carried out in the last century and concern the partial painting of the facades, the remaking of the cover of the sacristy and the baptistery and the addition of channels and downspouts in sheet metal. In the two niches on either side of the entrance two concrete statues were placed in 1923 with the SS. Peter and Paul.

The detection of the pathologies inherent to the degradation of the cover were carried out thanks by a direct visual analysis and water infiltration problems were found which led to the complete deterioration of the wooden structure making it unrecoverable.

Specifically, it is found that the roof covering is formed of broken, flaked and loose lead, resulting in an infiltration of water inside the attic that has caused the degradation of purlins and piers leading to piissos, thus causing the subsidence in some parts and the lowering of the bearing structure now misaligned.

The existing tinsmithery is in micaceous colored plate and is, in some points, detached from the supports and the walls contributing to the presence of water infiltrations in the attic.

The following interventions are aimed at eliminating the determining factors of the deterioration of facades and the removal of water infiltrations inside the church.

On the façade, starting from the ground, we will intervene on the restoration of the base plaster by removing the old plaster, performing a washing with hydro-cleaning of the exposed masonry, applying macro-porous dehumidifying plaster.

On the façade it is foreseen the peeling of the damaged plaster and the elimination of cement mortars to prepare a new plastering with lime mortar. Then a cleaning of the façade with rags and brushes will be carried out in order to remove the traces of dirt and easily removable residues. Then the old paint will be removed using a biological "paint remover" based on biodegradable blends of solvents. a generalized washing with water spray at low pressure, finally, a two-coat paint with a solid color will be performed using a mineral paint based on potassium silicates.

The goal of the restoration involves the restoration of the original shades which were present on the facade.
