Chromazon is an architectural installation designed for the courtyard of PS1 in Queens, New York. It is a concept for an open-air canopy, which provides shading and lounging for the museum visitors as well as an exciting event space for the rave parties held on weekends during the summer months. This prestigious competition is hosted annually by the MoMA/PS1 in order to showcase young talent in the field of contemporary architectural design. From a large pool of nominated applicants five finalists are chosen to compete in the actual competition. While only the winning project is being realized, all five finalist projects are honored with a reception and an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The title ‘Chromazon’ is a reference to color, chromosome and the Amazon in an attempt to converge our fascination with nature’s intricate expressions, exotic form and generative processes (biological as well as digital). It was our declared intention to create a design that is manifold- equally place, object, organization and growth expressing itself in realms both material and emotional while oscillating between various states ranging from calm and relaxed to dark and moody to loud and exuberant. Chromazon is color and rhythm. It is still and yet in constant motion. Scalar shifts, color gradation, shades of light and a recursive structural organization cumulate into a vibrant pulse illuminating its environment with visual and visceral effects. While being foremost a place to gather, relax, contemplate, engage, exchange, dance and celebrate, Chromazon is also strangely familiar. It evokes images akin to those found in floral and faunal worlds, transmuted through the digital into hybrid organisms. Leafs, scales, cells, branches, vertebras, petals, skeletons merge into exotic shapes expressing diversity within coherency. Chromazon’s indeterminate character is born out of the processes it evolved from. Never just responding to a single force but rather being formed by a multitude of different stimuli, it transcends singular categories and draws from its ambiguity.
