Competence Center
Walter Luttenberger, Graz & Vincent Mesnaritsch, Wien

Center of Competence of the Technical University of Graz, Modules 1 and 2:

In terms of city planning, the two multi-functional office buildings mark the division line between the university campus of the Technical University of Graz and the low buildings of its neighborhood.

Their appearance is, essentially, defined by three factors: The strict, sharply bounded, clear-cut geometry of the structure, followed by the sinuous, meandering outline and organization of the façade put into effect by narrower and wider strips of ribbon windows which are alternately offset, and the aesthetic appeal of two different shades of red. As surface of the façade, fine plaster was applied.

The gross floor area is around 7500 sqm, the building cost app. 8 million €. The demand for flexibility required a construction that permits joining walls for each window jamb of the officemodule. Light is flowing in from both sides of the offices, whose atmosphere is determined by naturalcolored concrete, wood and glass materials. Staircases, on the other hand, are designed as intensively colored capsules in green and yellow - the complementary color of the façade.

Located on the roofs are transparent, light boxes containing the staircase-landings. The green roofs – which are important for the retention of rainwater – act as recreation areas with laidout, shaded wooden decks.
