On a 10,000 m2 plot in the heart of La Moraleja, Madrid, we designed a single-family home.
The generous site allowed us to propose a large architectural footprint, leading to a single-story house. We began the project with a strong focus on the entrance. A winding driveway conceals the house at first, gradually revealing a sequence of volumes that culminate in a large courtyard reminiscent of an old "hacienda". In the courtyard, a wall-mounted fountain and a roundabout sheltered beneath a substantial beam provide shade at the drop-off area.
With a clear intention to blend the proportions and elements of classical architecture with contemporary definitions and finishes, the result is a timeless home. We incorporated gestures from classical architecture - such as patios, vertical rhythms of columns, thick walls, and symmetries - alongside contemporary solutions like glass panels that disappear into walls, transforming interior spaces into porches or open areas more in tune with modern living.
A key element of the project is the dual-level architectural composition. At ground level, we arranged a series of nine distinct volumes, each serving different functions. Above them, like a great floating slab, sits a large rectangular roof measuring 50 metres long by 19 metres wide.
These ground-level volumes create a domestic scale, forming patios and defined relationships with the immediate surroundings. In contrast, the expansive, abstract roof generates a clean "skyline", a strong horizontal line that stands in stark contrast to the natural landscape behind it.
Concrete façades, lime-rendered walls, stone flooring, and oak carpentry are the key materials of the project - timeless and artisanal choices that bring warmth and quality to the home.
Finally, in front of the social area and garden, the pool disappears visually through its reflection, mirrored by a shallow sheet of water only 15 cm deep. Together, they create a landscape element that feels more like a designed water feature than a traditional swimming pool - emphasised by its dark-toned finish.
