Conrad Bahrain was envisioned as a seamless and elegant journey—an architectural narrative that flows effortlessly from one space to the next. LW Design approached the project with the ambition to craft an experience that is both intuitive and elevated, where every element is thoughtfully placed to ensure clarity, comfort, and quiet sophistication. This is not a space that demands attention, but one that gently holds it. Whether guests are arriving, resting, socializing, or simply moving through the hotel, each moment feels guided yet unforced. The transitions between spaces are smooth, the design language cohesive, and the overall impression is one of subtle orchestration.

Materiality was a central tenet of the brief. The design called for surfaces that are rich in texture, honest in character, and evocative of place. Rather than impose an aesthetic, LW sought to reveal one—through carefully layered palettes, expertly selected finishes, and a sensibility that connects the contemporary with the contextual. The result is a visual and tactile landscape that feels deeply considered, resolutely modern, and rooted in the spirit of Bahrain.

The connection to The Trade Room (Mezzanine Bar) was added after the entire concrete structure and primary MEP were built. A new staircase and lift were introduced to connect the levels, reflecting the agility and ambition of the design team in overcoming late-stage structural challenges without compromising the spatial coherence of the project.

Concept
“Live in the moment. Be Bold. Be Inspired. Be Energized. Be Loud.” This mantra lies at the heart of the Conrad Bahrain experience and became a guiding principle for the design. The hotel was conceived as a gathering point for a new breed of global citizen—individuals who move across cultures, time zones, and industries with ease. They are unapologetically themselves, stylish in a way that feels effortless, and drawn to places that reflect their pace and passions.

In response, the design does not conform to traditional luxury tropes. Instead, it embraces contrast, personality, and energy. It invites play, encourages authenticity, and speaks to the individuality of each guest. At the same time, it remains grounded in comfort—recognizing that the truest luxury is not to impress, but to make people feel entirely at home in their own skin.

Various design elements
The interiors of Conrad Bahrain pulse with the cultural richness of their setting. Rather than leaning on overt motifs, the design draws inspiration from the city’s thriving creative scene. Artworks by local and regional talents are placed with curatorial precision, appearing not only in obvious locations but in forgotten corners, unexpected niches, and transitional spaces—turning every corridor into a moment of discovery.

Textiles, artisanal objects, and commissioned pieces lend the hotel a deeply human dimension. These are not decorative afterthoughts but foundational elements of the experience. They remind the guest that beauty lies in the detail—and that every detail has been considered.

The suites, which benefit from the building’s original residential layout, are expansive and open. Each features a fully equipped Poliform kitchen, flowing seamlessly into living and dining areas that feel more like a private residence than a hotel room. Full-height windows frame views of the sea and the city beyond, while the integration of smart technology ensures that functionality matches finesse. Every touchpoint—from lighting to layout—has been calibrated to support a lifestyle that is agile, discerning, and deeply connected.

About the ambience
The lobby sets the tone with an architectural confidence that is immediate yet understated. It is not a place one passes through, but a space one steps into—with intention. The drama is controlled, built through proportion, tone, and contrast. Cool terrazzo floors are offset by the warmth of timber-paneled walls. A fluted dark stone reception desk introduces texture and presence, while above it, a sculptural brass chandelier offers a poetic counterpoint—casting shifting shadows and pulling the eye toward a curated art installation beyond.

At the center of it all, a sweeping staircase makes a sculptural ascent to the mezzanine level, where the whisky and cigar bar awaits. This bold architectural gesture provides not just vertical movement but visual momentum—anchoring the space while introducing rhythm.

Furnishings throughout the public areas are arranged with a sense of purpose. Lounges are intimate yet open, encouraging both connection and quiet retreat. A central beverage station brings a layer of hospitality that feels both casual and considered. At every scale, from macro to micro, the space is choreographed to encourage pause, interaction, and a feeling of belonging.

Even the hotel’s meeting spaces were conceived with narrative depth. Each room is named after a cultural or historical landmark—Bab Al Bahrain, The Harbour, 1920—establishing a connection to local heritage without relying on symbolism. The rooms themselves are sleek and contemporary, designed to support focused work while also offering soft, lounge-like breakout zones for informal conversation and collaboration.

Health Club
Perched high above the city, the health and wellness facilities are designed to do more than support fitness—they elevate it. With panoramic views stretching across Manama’s skyline, the health club becomes a space of both energy and escape. The equipment is state-of-the-art, but it’s the setting that truly transforms the workout into an experience. Natural light floods the interiors, casting long shadows and animating the surfaces, while the horizon beyond offers a constant reminder of motion and possibility.
The design encourages every guest to recharge on their own terms—whether through movement, meditation, or simply taking in the view. It is a space where wellness is embedded not just in function, but in feeling.

Pool
The rooftop pool is a sculptural element in its own right—boldly tiled and dramatically lit. During the day, it offers a tranquil escape from the city below, its still surface reflecting the changing sky. At night, it becomes a focal point of energy and atmosphere, especially as it forms part of the terrace for Sushi Samba.

As music begins to play and lights pulse gently around its perimeter, the pool transforms from a place of solitude to a stage for social engagement. It becomes a backdrop to the hotel’s evening rituals—a shimmering centerpiece that activates the senses and amplifies the experience. Whether for a midday dip or a midnight cocktail, the pool is always a place to return to.

Challenges overcome
The project’s evolution from a high-end residential tower to a luxury hotel was not without complexity. When LW Design came on board, the structure was already built and the interior fit-out had begun. This required a complete recalibration of spatial logic and programmatic function—while preserving what was already in place.

Timelines were tight, and the reimagining had to be swift and strategic. Yet within these constraints, LW Design found creative opportunity. The generous dimensions of the original apartments became a hallmark of the guest rooms, while the rigid frameworks of the existing core were transformed into strengths—defining circulation, intimacy, and flow with precision.

Unique / key features
One of the hotel’s most distinctive features lies in the generous scale of its suites. Owing to the building’s original residential blueprint, the rooms feel expansive, open, and unusually flexible. This spatial generosity allows the interiors to breathe, offering guests a rare sense of ease and composure.

Another defining element is the hotel’s top-floor dining destination—Sushi Samba. Here, the concept of duality is explored with finesse. By morning, the space offers a refined and distinctive breakfast service, bathed in daylight and tuned to tranquility. As the sun sets, the venue shifts in tempo and tone—becoming the celebrated global brand that fuses Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian cuisines in a dramatic and energetic setting. This transformation allows the space to serve multiple identities throughout the day, maximizing both its use and its emotional resonance.

Technical elements
Throughout the project, materiality is treated as narrative. Walls are clad in richly textured finishes, from the soft depth of walnut timber to the cool elegance of exotic stone. These are punctuated by accents of brushed copper and deep, saturated textiles—injecting personality without overpowering the whole. Each room unfolds as a composition: layered, balanced, and alive with detail.

Furniture selections were made with both form and feeling in mind. The pieces are sculptural yet approachable—generous in scale, intentional in silhouette. Lighting adds a further layer of drama and mood, defining each space with precision and flair. Together, these elements result in interiors that feel expressive, intelligent, and unmistakably designed.

Details
Located within the FEB Tower on Bahrain’s Manama seafront, Conrad Bahrain rises 24 floors into the city’s skyline. It sits at the intersection of financial vigor and coastal serenity—within close reach of the city center yet open to the sea. The hotel comprises multiple levels of guest-facing programming, with the lower floors dedicated to arrival, lounge, and dining experiences, and levels 12 to 23 housing 98 guest suites, including a top-tier penthouse. The crowning level—floor 24—is home to Sushi Samba, completing the hotel’s narrative of luxury, lifestyle, and layered experience.

The project was designed by LW Design’s Hong Kong studio, with Richard Holmes leading the post-contract phase.
