The Container House is a residential project completed in 2025 on a private lakeside plot near Tampere, Finland.
The client's request was clear and, at the time, technically ambitious: a modern house, built with recycled materials, industrialized in its construction logic. Our response was to propose a structure built entirely from recycled maritime shipping containers — one of the most extensively produced yet underutilized building modules in the world. Containers cross entire oceans once, then are often abandoned in port facilities indefinitely.
Our first design move was to study the three available standard container dimensions and decide to use all of them. This decision transforms a constraint into a generative rule: the geometry of the modules produces the geometry of the house.
The ground floor is formed by two containers of identical size, positioned in a crossing configuration. This produces a T-shaped plan that creates two clearly differentiated social zones living and dining while offering panoramic views towards the lake from both. The vertical circulation is housed within the longest container, which provides the staircase core and connects to the upper level. The upper floor is composed of one large and one small container, differentiating the main bedroom from the bathroom without additional partitioning.
The main technical challenge was adaptation to a Nordic climate. Standard containers have minimal thermal mass and severe thermal bridge problems at all structural connections. The solution was a complete envelope strategy: high-density spray foam insulation inside the container walls, a thermally broken timber cladding system on the exterior, and triple-glazed openings throughout. The result is a building that satisfies Nordic energy standards while maintaining the visual honesty of the container as its fundamental material.
