The Tampere Library is a public library proposal for Tampere, Finland a city whose architectural identity was forged in the rapid industrial expansion of the 19th century, when factories, warehouses, and civic buildings were constructed in brick and defined by masonry arched structures that still dominate the city center.

The project's central question was how to design a building that narrates the history of the city without reproducing it. The answer was reinterpretation: the arch Tampere's most persistent architectural element is extracted from its historical context and re-deployed at contemporary scale, transformed from a loadbearing masonry necessity into a structural expression of civic significance.

The resulting building interior reads as a kind of secular temple a sequence of arched spaces of increasing scale that culminates in the main reading room. The progression from entrance to reading room is designed as a gradual intensification of spatial quality and natural light, optimized for the low-angle northern light that defines Finnish winter.

The site strategy was equally important. The building occupies a position that could have interrupted existing pedestrian connections across the city. Instead, the project generates intermediate transition spaces  covered external porticos and a frontal garden-park that actively improve connectivity while extending the cultural program into the public realm.

The construction uses ceramic brick on the facade in direct material continuity with Tampere's built heritage, while the structural arches are engineered in contemporary terms: slender, open, and capable of spanning larger programmatic spaces than their historical precedents. The roof incorporates reinforced thermal insulation appropriate for high-latitude conditions.
