Copper Door Residence

A quiet by-lane in Mysore plays host to THE COPPER DOOR, a house that adheres to all the principles of making a statement. The client initially came to us with an ancestral home that needed refurbishing, while retaining its true traditional soul. A recce of the place made us reimagine the entire architectural potential, of which the current home is a compelling result.

Keen spatial planning and a thorough understanding of the existing structure by us made way for the creation of a more functional, concise, yet scintillating design. Adding more definition to the overall facade, by establishing a strong visual connect across all the primary outer spaces of the house, seemed fitting to the task we had at hand.

Extensions played a significant role in elevating the overall dynamics of the house. Be it the balconies that provided room for covering the car park, or the terrace that helped form a solid roof for the garden space.

The prolific use of white in the exteriors is given a breather with the grey separation and compound wall. A fair balance of the two is established, resulting in an output that is immersive, not to mention, a visual treat. Retaining its original unique angle, the slope of the roof was modified further to exude a certain artistic quality.

A warm welcome to the interiors awaits, via a copper-clad door that was crafted to be one of a kind. The foyer was deliberately kept cozy and minimal, to pleasantly greet potential visitors. The brief called for a copious amount of natural lighting internally, hence we located strategic positions for the windows and skylights, to accentuate ample light and breeze entering the house while ensuring minimal demolition. The ribbed wood paneling that starts at the verandah and continues into the foyer and living room, adds warmth to the white-dominated house and echoes the client’s personality.

The usual colossal furniture placed throughout the house was consciously traded with lively, lighter ones that when placed thoughtfully, facilitated more movement, thus exhibiting a very carefree, relaxed atmosphere.

The west-facing bedroom is accorded an extended balcony, which is well-ventilated with metal louvers placed back & forth to give a fluted illusion. This adds a charming accent to the house while also being inscrutable, thus maintaining absolute privacy. The Arabic works of art and decor chosen for the house are expressive and meaningful, each spinning its own story and thus creating an air of exclusivity.

An ancestral home modified into a sentimental souvenir- is what we aimed to achieve via refurbishing this vivacious house. Old-school charm married with modernism is what makes this residence emblematic of the client’s ancestral values.
