For its modest 1,500-square-foot size, Corollary Wine's new tasting room, designed by Waechter Architecture, provides a focal point for Corollary's 57-acre estate. Guests are invited to experience winemaker tastings with sweeping views of the vineyards and a range of indoor and outdoor seating options in all seasons. This unique building is wrapped in metal powder-coated in a custom red color that makes the building's sharp architecture stand out in the landscape.
The brilliant powder coating wraps every exterior surface, from walls to outdoor ceilings to aluminum windows and doorframes. Three of Banker Wire's Drift flexible wire mesh curtains filter the hilltop's near-constant winds by 50 percent. The stainless steel material helps cut the wind and keep the rain out of the tasting areas, with the longest run of the flexible mesh spanning 45 feet long. Using the Fold mounting system, each run of flexible wire mesh can neatly fold away in wall recesses when not used.
"Our goal was to provide visitors with a large, unobstructed view of our vineyard during tasting sessions while protecting them from the inclement weather of the Willamette Valley. We faced several challenges: creating a robust system that wouldn't deteriorate in exterior conditions, ensuring ease of use year-round without seasonal storage, and designing a system that collapses out of sight. The folding top-track system, hidden by metal panel doors matching the facade, met these needs. We wanted something special that would enhance the building design, not detract from it." states Alexis Coir, Architect with Waechter Architecture. "The flexible metal mesh allows views of the landscape, and casts soft shadows into the tasting rooms. The wire mesh adds a delicate, dreamlike quality to the interior while presenting a bold character from the exterior. A hanging, flexible system solved the structural issue, retaining the unobstructed view and maintaining the building's character."
The wire mesh creates a semi-transparent facade that provides privacy while allowing light and air to permeate the space. It also acts as a protective barrier to visitors by knocking down windy conditions and providing solar shading from the blinding sun without compromising the building's aesthetic appeal.
The mesh's geometric pattern adds an artistic touch, contributing to the building's modern look and feel. This thoughtful integration of wire mesh demonstrates a perfect blend of form and function, highlighting the architect's attention to detail and commitment to creating a harmonious entertainment space.
Alexis also stated, "Working with Banker Wire was fantastic. They were always immediately available via phone / email / video, and excited to help us tackle the unique details of our project. We love the product and could not be happier with the effect that it lends to our original design."
