The Art of Rust: CORTEN House

The architectural concept of Corten House is based on the intersection of two distinct volumes: a taller one, where the bedrooms are located on the upper floor, and a lower one, which houses the living area, spread over two levels with a height of 6 meters. This volumetric composition creates a visual and functional balance, offering fluid and spacious interiors.

The house is located in the northernmost part of the land, with the main entrance facing the street. Thus, the edifice blocks the view of passers-by towards the inner courtyard with the garden and swimming pool.

Tatiana Lupascu (architect – concept author): "We wanted to achieve the effect of a cake, 'covered' in white marzipan, from which we could cut and reveal a chocolate sponge! Well, we settled the marzipan part – large-format, matte white porcelain tiles applied on a ventilated façade system. The 'chocolate,' however, was a challenge: we wanted something more exotic, more vibrant. And that’s why we chose COR-TEN!"

Materiality plays a crucial role in the architectural expression of the house. Initially, COR-TEN steel looks like any other steel, but over time, as it is exposed to environmental factors, the rust layer transforms into a thin patina, protecting the surface and making the material corrosion-resistant. Its color evolves from freshly formed orange-brown to lighter brown and, finally, to dark brown.

To ensure a controlled and consistent finish, the panels were pre-weathered by exposing them to natural elements until the desired color was achieved, then sealed with a protective layer to stop further oxidation, preserving the material's aesthetic over time.

COR-TEN was also used for the decorative façade elements, shading systems, and vertical sliding louvers, adding dynamism and rhythm to the architectural composition.
