Deborah Berke Partners as Architects

The Cummins Engine Company selected Deborah Berke Partners through an invited competition to transform a 4-acre block in downtown Indianapolis that will provide a highquality work environment for their employees as well as strengthen the resurgence of downtown Indianapolis. Functioning as the company’s global distribution business headquarters, the project includes an office tower, conference center, retail, and extensive public green space.

The thin profile of this new headquarters for Cummins’ Global Distribution Business unit preserves open space for a new urban park and reinforces the “street wall” of a major downtown thoroughfare. A highly calibrated façade, with integrated fins and shades, minimizes heat gain and glare and maximizes transparency and access to urban views. A series of double height social hubs—each with a signature staircase—create spaces for collaborative work and chance encounters. The narrow floor plates allow the interior to be entirely day-lit. The sculpted tower, with its inflections and projections, adds a striking landmark to the city.
