DARIUS AND GIRENAS STADIUM

The Kaunas Darius and Girėnas Stadium is one of the most significant sports and architectural landmarks in the city, with a history spanning nearly a century. After decades of initial construction and several reconstructions, it is now entering a new phase — a third life. Our goal was not only to update but to redefine this historic structure using modern technologies, sustainability principles, and innovative architecture, as if “raising it from the dead” for a new era.

The stadium was originally established in 1924–1925, when Steponas Darius initiated the reclamation of swampy land, marking the beginning of sport development in Lithuania. Over the decades, it underwent various architectural and functional transformations: from 1934, with modern open tribunes, to the brutalist style introduced in 1968, which reflected its time but eventually became unsafe and inefficient for use.

Today, within just a few years, we have collaboratively redesigned and reconstructed the stadium into a dynamic, contemporary sports and cultural hub — safe, attractive, and sustainable. Conceptually, it feels like it’s “embedded” into the ground, symbolically and visually, as if reborn, inviting the city and its inhabitants to discover a new face of this historic site.

Our vision was to create a stadium resembling a flowing wave, soaring over green spaces. These waves—graceful and dynamic—combine functionality with aesthetics, with their surfaces crafted from micro-engraved aluminum slats, which over time will develop a patina and oxidize, transforming the facade into a constantly evolving textured surface.

We chose the facade as a visual symbol connecting the city and its history. Instead of traditional wood, aluminum slats form a distinctive, engaging texture that makes the stadium’s silhouette stand out — like a floating gymnast’s ribbon. Although protected from fire, these slats will age with time, darkening and acquiring a patina, giving the facade a sense of permanence and change.

Inside, our focus was on creating a space that is not only comfortable for athletes and spectators but also inspiring. The most important element is the lush, UEFA-standard, heated playing field with a modern, durable surface capable of extending the sports season and respecting high standards.

Through this project, we aim to not only renovate a symbol of sports but to strengthen the city’s identity. The stadium will become more than just a venue for sporting events; it will serve as a cultural hub where residents and visitors gather, fostering community life and celebrating the city’s sporting and cultural heritage.
