DDA Apartment - An Optimized Living Space for a Modern, Art-Loving Family

Design Brief
DDA is a renovation project tailored to meet the everyday needs of a young family of five, along with four additional "members"—one dog and three cats. Given the density of occupants, the design prioritizes the optimization of shared spaces to ensure both functionality and comfort, while fostering interaction and connection among family members.

A key technical challenge of the project was the HVAC system, which had to be meticulously designed to manage odors, provide fresh air, and regulate humidity—ensuring a healthy and pleasant indoor environment.

Design Concept
The design draws inspiration from the homeowner’s admiration for the works of Piet Mondrian, known for their clean lines and bold color compositions. Functional spaces are articulated into distinct volumes, each defined by unique materials and color palettes. Circulation areas and shared zones act as connective axes, allowing for seamless movement and a cohesive spatial experience. The result is a vibrant, cheerful interior that reflects the owner's lifestyle and personality.

With a modest floor area of 108m² relative to the family's needs, the design emphasizes clarity and organization. Key spatial strategies include:

Efficient integration of technical systems: The HVAC system is discreetly concealed within ceiling voids, primarily in hallways and secondary spaces. This approach preserves ceiling height in key living areas, enhancing spatial volume and openness.
Minimalist ceiling detailing: Lighting fixtures, air vents, and ventilation/exhaust systems are carefully embedded within functional blocks and ceiling details. This strategy ensures a visually clean ceiling plane that enhances the aesthetic of the colored volumes.

Enhanced spatial permeability: Select functional rooms are enclosed with frosted glass partitions in strategic locations. This allows for visual and spatial continuity while maintaining privacy. The translucent glass filters natural light deeper into the interior, expanding the perception of space.
