Compact Education Building

This compact, ellipse shaped building as an autonomous appearance has a strong link with its green surrounding area. The interior of the building represents the informal character of De Thij by means of its differentiated division of space and clear routing. With this model containing a high level of flexibility the new vision of education meant for today but also for the future can be made reality.

The pure ellipse creates a clear contrast with the rectangular structure of the interior. The ellipse as a compact building volume of three building layers is being hollowed out from the inside to have light and air enter into the core of the building. Besides that, the hollowing out serves as a means to give shape to the public spaces of the school and to connect them to each other by means of a clear routing.

The façade contour follows the ellipse and cuts off a part of the square shape. This way an interesting spatial confrontation is created between two different motions. At the location the ellipse and the volume of the sports halls encounter each other a part of the ellipse is cut off creating an obvious entrance to the school.

The school building of three layers consists of various parts. At ground floor level the home base of the lower grades are situated while at the second floor the upper grades are situated. They meet on the first floor at the heart of the school at science subjects and creative expression. They both make use of this floor. This way a so-called sandwich construction is created, which has an important arranging effect within the school building.
