Deco Reimagined: A Timeless Transformation

In a quiet Auckland neighbourhood filled with classic New Zealand architecture, a 1940s art deco home has been revitalised by Nala Studio Architects with a thoughtful renovation that elegantly blends old-world charm with modern practicality. Recognised in Haven magazine and celebrated as an entrant in an interior design competition, this project shines not only as a design achievement but as a heartfelt transformation for a growing family.

Bringing Life to the Vision

The owners came to us with a vision: a kitchen that could adapt to family life with an active toddler while creating an inviting space for hosting friends. They dreamed of a layout that captured the charm of their home’s vintage character while providing functional, family-friendly zones. More natural light and an open, airy feel were essential to making their vision come to life.

Intelligent Design for Modern Living

Given the constraints of the home’s original footprint, we embraced creative planning to craft a spacious, open-plan kitchen. By removing walls around the laundry and bathroom, we introduced a built-in laundry area and a modest walk-in pantry, freeing up the kitchen to feel expansive and inviting. Large new windows along the exterior flood the space with sunlight, creating a bright, cheerful environment that beautifully complements the open layout.

In addition to improved flow, a breakfast bar serves as a cosy nook for casual family moments or evening gatherings with friends. The connection between the kitchen and dining area has been redefined, allowing the space to seamlessly shift from family hub to entertainment zone.

Material Choices: Honouring History with a Modern Twist

For materials, we focused on bridging the past with the present. Recycled timber from the home was repurposed for the breakfast bar exterior and pantry shelving, preserving a sense of history within the newly designed space. A custom-made white stone benchtop with a brass inlay adds a contemporary touch, echoing the brass finishes in the cabinetry handles and lighting, tying the new design into the home’s art deco roots.

The kitchen cabinetry in a soft grey-green shade, coupled with walls in a pale shell white, reflects a serene colour scheme that balances vintage warmth with modern elegance. Brass tube lighting above the breakfast bar mirrors the subtle brass detailing below, creating a harmonious unity in the design.

The Final Transformation

The completed kitchen and dining areas embody a refined balance between functionality and beauty, designed to support the family’s busy lifestyle and their love for entertaining. This cohesive approach inspired the owners to extend the renovations to the bathroom, optimising its layout and adding storage, achieving an elegant flow from one space to another.

The result is a home that respects its heritage while embracing the needs of a modern family—a place to gather, entertain, and create new memories. The vintage glamour and practicality harmoniously blend here, making this art deco revival an inspiring testament to thoughtful design.
