Deepwater House

Tobias Partners as Architects

Situated on one of Sydney’s signature urban sites at Ben Buckler point, North Bondi beach, the location for this five-story family home is the ultimate in Australian style.

But its emplacement at the quasi-tip of one of the city’s most prized peninsulas means that the project also has a strong obligation to respect public perception and reception as well as private requirements.

Taking in iconic views, the client brief demanded a project outcome that would result in an impeccably conceived and constructed building for theirs and their neighbours' enjoyment, both now and in the future.

The building will actively articulate almost year-round sun via a series of operable external screens, solar – photovoltaic – heating and a clever distribution of volumes along axes of light availability.

The savvy channeling of Summer breezes and Winter winds through conduits of cross-ventilation guarantee an airy, always-fresh interior in harmony with the panorama offered by the building’s setting.

The resultant building will connect with and contribute positively to its surrounds through high quality finishing of environmentally-sensitive materials, timeless design and through the de-densification of the building mass facilitating the introduction of external voids, private open space and vegetation within the building envelope at all levels

While keeping within similar typologies to that of the previous building occupying the site, the new building will nonetheless stretch the typology, allowing on of Sydney’s most highly-prized locations to step forward into the 21st century.
