Digitalo

Brick building for digital technology he building, in the Kivimies block of the Otaniemi campus area, was originally designed for the use of VTT Information Technology. The form of the building reflects the internal organization of functions and spaces and also the strictly controlled information security. The six cubes, each containing a cluster of workspace cells for 20‐40 persons per floor, are linked by an open space, which again contains a free‐form space housing the workers’ communal facilities. From this communal space there are access routes to more private workspace cells through a zone of services and auxiliary facilities. The free area of each 16 x 16 metre cell can accommodate all types of office solutions or their combinations without restrictive structures or building services.

The structural system of the Digitalo buildings consists of load bearing walls and long‐span slabs. A system of load bearing walls was a fitting choice in the Otaniemi campus, with its predominance of red brick buildings. Another line of load bearing walls separates the services and auxiliary facilities zone from the work areas. In the central zone of the work area cell the horizontal structure comprises double T slabs, while next to the walls hollow core slabs have been used. Thanks to this arrangement the offices have smooth reflective ceilings, which can be used for indirect lighting.
