DK House : Multigenerational homes for extended families

-  DK House is a design that optimizes natural light and ventilation within a 11x11m plot, aiming to create a harmonious living space that balances architectural form and functional use for a multi-generational family. This project seeks to establish a cost-efficient and sustainable home environment.

- The house is designed to accommodate both the living and working needs of a family spanning three generations. It emphasizes simplicity, completeness, rustic charm, and a close connection with nature. The house integrates various transitional spaces, such as verandas, courtyards, and corridors, to create a seamless blend between architecture and nature, and between the interior and exterior spaces. This design enhances air circulation and softens natural light.

- Facing west, the house features a front yard acting as a sun-shielding setback and a buffer before entering the main living area. The façade minimizes windows to prevent direct sunlight, while windows are strategically placed on the side walls to improve ventilation. The cool breeze enters from the rear of the house, which is adjacent to neighboring properties. As a result, a small courtyard combined with a skylight is positioned at the rear, ensuring continuous cross-ventilation throughout the house.

- Since the children are at work during the day and only return in the evening, the mother is the primary occupant during daytime hours. Therefore, at the project’s outset, the kitchen was strategically placed near the circulation area, allowing the mother to cook while still engaging with neighbors in the surrounding community.

- On the first floor, an open-concept living room and kitchen are connected, along with a bedroom and a bathroom concealed behind a hidden door integrated with a decorative cabinet. These two areas are accessible through the living room’s cabinetry. The second floor features a worship space, three small bedrooms, and a shared bathroom for these areas.

- DK House is an intriguing project. It exemplifies one of the key concerns we all share: how to integrate aesthetics, affordability, and sustainability into architectural design.
