Doukas School Façade Redesign

The comprehensive renovation of the façades at Doukas School redefines the architectural expression of the existing campus while retaining the institution’s educational heritage and established identity. Designed by “G Architects & Associates”, the intervention establishes a coherent language of colour, materials and façade articulation, bringing the individual buildings into a unified composition and carrying the school’s legacy into its contemporary appearance.

Grey horizontal bands at the base and roofline express the buildings’ structural logic, giving the structural frame a clear role in the composition. Their continuity defines the cladding and openings within a legible perimeter that visually embraces the building volumes. This framing conveys stability and protection, lending architectural expression to the idea of a secure educational setting.

Deep blue, an integral part of the school’s identity, extends across broad surfaces, visually connecting the separate buildings. Warm wood finishes and light-coloured façade elements introduce variations in texture and brightness. Signage is integrated into the geometry of these surfaces, bringing the school’s graphic identity into the architectural composition of the envelope.

Vertical louvres introduce a secondary layer of articulation, counterbalancing the campus’s pronounced horizontality. Their repetition and projection from the façade plane create depth and shifting shadows, while establishing a rhythm between solid surfaces and openings. Facing the courtyard, this shared compositional system gives coherence to the building frontages that frame the school community’s daily life.

Material selection and the renewal of the building envelope also serve the objective of improving energy performance. The intervention aims to reduce operational energy demand and, in turn, the buildings’ environmental footprint. The architectural treatment of the façades is therefore part of a broader approach to the long-term, responsible use of the existing buildings.

The lead architect’s connection to Doukas School as an alumnus gives the intervention a personal dimension. Memories of his school years informed the intention to retain a sense of familiarity, linking the renewed façades to a place that helped shape his own development.
