Set within the iconic resort of Dunas Douradas resort, part of the original masterplan of Vale do Lobo, in the Algarve, the renovation and extension of this residence embraces the spirit of its surroundings to create a timeless vacation home for a growing family that gathers throughout the year.
The intervention transforms a modest beach house into a year-round sanctuary for the family, balancing heritage, landscape, and contemporary living. Guided by a desire for clarity and calm, the intervention respects the existing structure while gently expanding it to accommodate evolving needs. The architecture seeks to depurate the existing structure - removing excess to reveal its essence - while extending it in a way that feels both natural and necessary.
The design draws on local materials and construction traditions: lime plaster, timber, and hydraulic tiles interact with the textures of sand, pine, and sea air, grounding the home in its environment.
Architectural gestures aim to depurate, stripping back the non-essential to reveal an ascetic, tranquil comfort.
Spatially, the project is defined by its relationship to the outdoors. A central feature of the renovation is the creation of a generous outdoor terrace, conceived as an open-air living room. Openings are carefully calibrated to frame the surrounding nature, while external wooden partitions act as filters—modulating light, views, and privacy. These layered thresholds blur the boundaries between inside and out, allowing the house to breathe with the landscape.
The result is an architecture of quiet confidence - at once respectful of place and personal in expression - crafted to host gatherings, solitude, and the everyday rituals of family life.
The result is a refined and quiet architecture that lives in dialogue with nature, the seasons, and the rhythms of family life.
