“It all started with a notion of taking the clients on a nostalgic trip and giving the visual comfort of their ancestral home,” says architect Urvi Mistry. The diversity of culture that comes along with the geographical progress in any direction in India has awestruck a wandering heart. Nestled in south Gujarat city Surat, this 3bhk is owned by a south Indian client who had a very apt brief of bringing their cultural and design aspect with a contemporary twist to their modern abode in the urban context.
The domesticity of the living room with a warm color palette unfolds a familiar chord and takes us back to the tropical architecture of south India. The wicker furniture with its rooted wooden textures and tones seems to develop organically as we stroll around the other spaces. The cane detailing in the bottom part of the sofa warms up the living area accompanied by a customized wooden table with the greys bridging the gaps of the contextuality by making it a collage of connections between two design ideologies.
From the knobs to chairs every element in space depicts pre-contemporary taste. The adjoining dining area has been conceptualized with a similar design ideology, resulting in cane furniture contrasted with a classic French themed white kitchen. The legs of the dining table reminisce a wooden column playing a key element in an ethnic south Indian home.
As we move further to the bedrooms, it quite narrates the layered story of a family tree. The serene white bedroom with a white wardrobe and grey hues coated in PU evokes peace with its subtleness. The canvas artefacts in figurative patterns bring a sense of joy, life, colour and character all at a time into the bedroom.
The master bedroom is a monochromatic picture of wooden and wicker finished furniture that depicts the contemporary touch with its fine detailing. One amazing detail that entrails a designer’s mind is the wardrobe handle that has been created with a curvy niche. The cane finish on the surface exhibits fine craftsmanship that resonates with the taste of simplicity. The headboard layered with two colours adds a tinge of playfulness camouflaging into monochromatic hues.
The bedroom on either side is a mirror of its true essence. The side table has a customized detail of an ethnic Indian pattern with carved legs that have been handcrafted at the site. The embossed pattern on the MDF has been PU coated in matte finish keeping the core ideology intact. The arched mirror adjacent to the study area seems to be deliberately breaking the rigid corners formed through form and textures by the elements within the space.
Whispering serenity with humble materials is the fine language of this abode. Despite the copious neighborhood, the designer has finely crafted the home of dreams with bare minimal materials and resources.
