Equinox Vancouver
Luis Alberto Valdizon - When They Find Us

Equinox Vancouver

Montalba Architects, Inc. as Architects

The design of this luxury fitness facility was developed around the concept of a sculpted canyon inspired by Vancouver's architectural and natural landscapes. A bold, grand entry lobby draws patrons in and establishes a strong visual connection between the club's multiple floors. The grandeur of this central space is sharply contrasted by small, intimate coves throughout that become retreats for social interaction. Across from the prominent, blackened steel stair-core are the member services offices; glass boxes which allow for easy accessibility while maintaining privacy. The fireplace feature wall anchors the ground floor, creating an informal lounge space between the retail and fitness programs. Framed louvers at the storefront continue the importance of visual connectivity and grandeur, while allowing for additional light to penetrate the interior spaces. Rich neutral materials of stone and wood create subtle texture throughout - returning to the conceptual canyon - while working to programmatically define spaces and guide patrons to main walkways.

Material Used:

What type of wood was used?

Bleached Walnut Wood is used throughout the club. This is finish that Equinox developed with wood vendor Madera Trade specific to this club location

What type of stone was used?

There are hints of Nero Marquina and Statuary Venato throughout the club. It is seen as the inverse of each other with the black and white backgrounds and veining.

What is the material used for the fireplace mantel?

The double-height fireplace is clad in a concrete composite material called Viroc which was brought in from Spain.

What type of material was used for the flooring (looks like concrete, wood and tiles)?

The entry level main space is poured concrete. Throughout the rest of the club is Bleached Walnut wood flooring (Barre, Pilates, Yoga, and Group Fitness) and Porcelain Floor Tile. Our strength and cardio areas are composed of rubber tiles and rolled rubber flooring.

Is that wallpaper in the studio room with the mirrors?

Yes our studios, (Barre, Pilates, Yoga, and Group Fitness) have wall covering. This is to provide an elevated design in tying back to Equinox being a luxury brand.

Where is the lounge furniture from?

The Equinox design team sources furniture from vendors throughout the world that is both made to order and vintage. Some of the furniture vendors that we worked with for EQX Vancouver are Tacchini, Stellarworks, ABC Carpet & Home, 1stDibs, and Walter Knoll

Additional information regarding the design inspiration.

Equinox Vancouver offers bleached walnut woods and concrete floors with reflective metallics to capture the perfect meld of modern urbanity of the city while saluting the pristine natural elements of the Pacific Northwest.

The space features a double height entry with smoked mirror ceiling that is anchored by a member lounge complete with a concrete clad fireplace. The locker rooms offer a simplistic color palette featuring Italian Calacatta and Dolomite Marbles in dimensional finishes.

Members ascend the blackened metal feature stairs to the Second Floor where they can find all Equinox featured programming on one level. Textured Calacatta Marble lines the corridor walls while a wood ceiling is prominent throughout.

The windows throughout the Second Floor provide members views of the city that were used as a point of inspiration in designing Equinox Vancouver.
