In a place once dedicated to silence and contemplation, something entirely new is taking shape: following an in-depth study involving animated 3D models, the former Catholic hospital church on the grounds of University Hospital Vienna is being transformed into a vibrant event space – a venue for interaction, staff development and special events organised by University Hospital Vienna (AKH) and the Medical University of Vienna. Here, respect for history is combined with bold, contemporary architecture.
Respectful treatment of the historic fabric
The existing structure of the church will be preserved: brickwork, natural stone columns and Solnhofer slabs will continue to define the character of the space. The original oak floorboards of the organ loft are being restored, whilst the interior walls are being repainted in natural white distemper – a deliberate choice, as it was not possible to recreate the original finish. This light-coloured backdrop creates a clean, modern aesthetic and serves as a projection surface for dynamic lighting effects.
Modern fixtures as striking accents
Confident, contemporary installations create distinct, entirely new spaces that can be used in a highly flexible and context-specific manner. New architectural elements take centre stage with confidence: a steel bridge connects the two galleries, a platform in the choir is accessed via a staircase, and an internal steel staircase links the levels. The external staircase and lift tower, constructed from steel and glass, blends seamlessly into the listed complex as a contemporary feature.
Light shapes the space
Warm white accent lighting highlights the historic structure – columns, vaults and walls – and creates a unique backdrop. Colour-controllable lighting creates dynamic atmospheres, generates different spatial sequences and guides visitors interactively through six distinct value spaces: strong interdisciplinarity &
(inter-)professionalism, a high willingness to engage in dialogue, high effectiveness in achieving results, recognition & appreciation, clear scope for action & responsibility, and a willingness to innovate and embrace change. A light art installation, inspired by the tensegrity principle, floats beneath the bridge in the form of a ‘cloud of light’, thereby lending the space an additional dimension.
Materials and furnishings: clarity and functionality
Black steel used for built-in features such as the bar, bridge, platform and internal staircase provides a striking contrast to the white interior and the wooden surfaces of the pulpit, organ and parts of the floor. Solnhofer slabs on the ground floor and polished screed in the galleries emphasise the high-quality, timeless aesthetic.
A space for new values
A completely new spatial structure unfolds through the interplay of historic fabric and modern architecture. The former hospital church is being transformed into a new venue for social interaction, embodying the values of the University Hospital Vienna (AKH) and the Medical University Vienna, and supporting processes of team development as well as the preservation and further development of corporate culture: a place where history lives on and the future is shaped. A place whose design embodies clear and strong values. A project that demonstrates: something entirely new can emerge from formerly sacred spaces – respectful, inspiring and full of possibilities.
